Did you know that in Super Metroid Crocomire is actually not a hostile creature?
Based on his design, you can clearly see how harmless he actually is: His eyes aren't on the front of his head but rather on the sides, eyes that are present in prey animals and that enhance peripheral vision to allow the animal to escape any possible predators. Crocomire also never attacks directly, but rather defends himself, directly backing off from Samus. His teeth might suggest a carnivore diet, but given how tiny they are these could be just for self-defence, just like his claws. Additionally, his body is not that agile, so defence is what has made his species survive, resembling a turtle. Finally, his red colour could not only intimidate and scare potential predators but also blend in with the environment, which in the case of Norfair is a warm colour.
Another reason to make his death seem even more tragic.
