Ancient Innovation Against Snow Blindness
Inuit snow goggles, also called igloo or inuuk, are an ingenious traditional solution to prevent snow blindness—a condition caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light reflected off snow and ice. Snow blindness can result in serious eye damage and, in severe cases, even lead to permanent vision loss.
These goggles are often crafted from bone, wood, or leather, and their distinctive narrow slit design reduces the amount of light entering the eyes while still allowing the wearer to see. The small slit limits UV exposure while improving focus, functioning much like modern sunglasses but without lenses!
This centuries-old technology exemplifies how the Inuit adapted to survive and thrive in extreme environments. Who knew such a simple design could be so effective?
