I had the pleasure of trying out Angry Fly recently, and you can see and read my impressions here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBodR_JfewE
However, not long after, I started playing the game on the Level 11 and the Angry Fly presented itself in a new and very impressive rendering of its basic concept and gameplay mechanics. The main catch is the fact that the experience and advancement system is so complex and diverse that it is hard to believe that it supports such an (outwardly) simple game.
However, it is precisely this which allows Angry Fly to overcome the constraints of the genre of the endless falling game, where Flappy Bird is probably the most well-known example. On this chassis, it builds up and builds wide, creating something that works as a fully defined arcade game where there is everything to work for and advance further along with the same angry fly looking to rescue its fiancée.
From a UX design standpoint, the game offers a great package for any Android device on which it can be played. With a simple yet totally adequate main menu, the users can easily find their way to any of the other options. Competitive players will enjoy the Leaderboards and get a great spot for attaining a challenge that will allow them to improve their own gaming style. On an individual level, the game’s Achievements section precisely follows the advancement and development path of the players, showcasing each relevant moment that occurred in-game. Aside from being a nice recap of a player’s achievements, it is also a cool system for rewarding the players for their effort.
The dedication of the PixBros Studios can also be seen in the fact that the app showcases a trailer. This short video provides the crucial elements of the backstory, mainly how the fly lost its loved one in the first place. But, the biggest strength of the game at this later stage comes in its Market section, where the players can purchase clothes, maps, and elixirs with the gold coins they collect.
This really kicks the game into a completely new gear. With some clothing item, like for example boots, the fly gets a “life” which offers a chance of hitting the obstacle and still living through it. Better skins come with more lives, making the game a lot more engaging and less punishingly difficult. Elixirs, on the other hand, offer a chance to do things like boost the XP or the gold coins collecting process, while others simply scale down the fly, making the levels more maneuverable. Finally, the ability to purchase new maps in the game spices things up immensely, offering things like the Pyramids of Egypt or the skyline of Paris.
Now, after playing on Level 11 I can easily say that its features make Angry Fly a fantastic opportunity for all those who love arcade games but also desire something fresh and new.
