This mix was really emotional for me, and originally started out as my attempt to make a “Dale North” style pop ballad. Throughout the production though, I kept adding things I thought would sound cool, and as such, it sounds nothing like Dale’s work. I should try again sometime to make my own DN song, because I think his music is excellent.

I think the original version of the song is a heartbreakingly beautiful melody with a wistful nostalgia to it, but the sound samples used of the singing robot dog try to cover up the bittersweet feelings with silly cheese. This is my attempt to make something a little more serious, while retaining all the heartful emotion that drew me to the original in the first place.

For the lead, I wanted to use the Logic monoQ analog synth, but in order to give it a little bit of extra character, I doubled it with a shimmering clean guitar sound for certain parts. This is also the first mix where I used a ridiculous amount of varied percussions, including some pretty cool drums that I bitcrushed beyond recognition, which I think sounds awesome. There is a good deal of panning tricks used in this one, so be sure to listen in headphones!

In retrospect, I think the regular drumkit sounds a bit too aggressive in the mix here, and could stand to come down slightly, but I am really proud of the drums that once bitcrushed are basically 8 bit samples, adding a nice retro sound to the rest of the otherwise lush track. The epiano note choices adds a lot of harmonic coloring that was not really present in the original, and I tried to specifically have it speak in a measured tone, adding depth to the music without demanding attention. As such, I feel that this is a song that benefits more from repeat listens, and that all of the really good stuff doesn’t grab you immediately. There are enough nice details on the surface to be catchy, but the richness is discovered a bit more slowly.

There is an original bridge section that I think adds to the overall mood of the song and gives a nice lead up to a breakdown before the final chorus.

One of my favorite arrangements i’ve done, and one that I really thinks shows how powerful a good arrangement can be in emphasizing qualities of a song that may be hidden away.
