Portugueses

The Portuguese are a playable European civilization in Age of Empires III, representing the Portuguese Empire that had multiple overseas colonies. They are considered one of the more challenging civilizations to play due to their relatively slow start, but they do have unique advantages.

Key Features:

They start with one Settler more than any other civilization, for a total of 7.
They do not have any Settler cards in their decks because of the extra Covered Wagons they receive every time they advance in age.
Their economy typically becomes stronger as the maximum settler output increases dramatically with each age advancement.
They have a strong navy, ranged infantry, and possess the best all-around Dragoons in the game.
The Portuguese generally try to get to the Fortress Age quickly due to their strength beyond the Commerce Age.
They can have three Explorers with a Home City Card. If the Explorers are properly upgraded at the Capitol, then they serve as very effective Infantry.
Their Organ Guns give them a distinct combat advantage, particularly against infantry.
Unique Units:

Cassador: Skirmisher with low hitpoints, but a strong attack. Good against infantry.
Organ Gun: Artillery that fires multiple projectiles. Better against infantry than buildings.
Royal Guard Units:

Crossbowman (Ordinance Besteiro)

The Portuguese are also a Commerce Age Alliance option in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition - The African Royals, available to the Ethiopians. They have a strong navy and ranged units, much like their counterpart in Age of Empires II. However, their economy is not notable until the late-game, making them a civilization that requires strategic planning and patience to play effectively.
