Jason Brody and his friends are stranded on a peculiar island. A very peculiar island, since it appears to be simultaneously in Cambodia (Khmer ruins), the South Pacific (Japanese WWII relics), Central or South America (mass cocaine smuggling), and the Caribbean (reggae music). If Jason didn't know better, he would think he's taken some of Dr. Earnhardt's happy pills.

And he is very eager to get off that island and go back to California, which is rather puzzling. Okay, follow my reasoning for a second:

Back in California, despite apparently being a natural with automatic weapons and vehicular homicide, Jason was a really wimpy and immature guy working a series of dead end jobs, and the only thing working out well for him in his life is his cute aspiring-actress girlfriend. Cute aspiring-actress girlfriend who will undoubtedly wise up and drop him like a used barf bag some day soon.

On the island however, he's 5 minutes in any direction from a gorgeous beach, he can steal any vehicle he likes with impunity, he can go hang gliding and jet skiing at will, he takes whatever he wants from whomever he wants, he can hunt and fish all day and make easy money killing bad guys and looting things. And the guy's like Sylvester Stallone with tats all of a sudden. So he wants to go back to his dead-end job in California? What in the hell for?

Oh, right. The island is full of murderous drug-addled psychopaths and animals that want to eat you. In fact, just about everyone on the island appears to be working for someone who is both ultra violent and batshit loco. There is that. I guess that could get old after awhile mebbe....

I don't know though. The beaches and recreational activities are pretty nice. Like Apocalypse Now meets Club Med.

The horror. The beaches. The horror and the beaches....
