Apple to Announce Google Gemini Integration this Fall: Bloomberg
Apple is set to announce the integration of Google Gemini into its devices this fall, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter. This news comes after the rumors of iOS 18 chatbot integration, which has been speculated for as long as OpenAI has been in the picture. Craig Federighi, Apple's software boss, even hinted at a potential Google deal shortly after the keynote.
Google Gemini is not the only AI model that Apple is rumored to be in talks with. Anthropic has also been mentioned as a potential partner, and Apple could announce a deal with the company at some point, if not this fall. However, Meta's Llama chatbot was quickly rejected due to its poor performance.
Apple's AI integration is part of its larger plan to make AI an avenue for direct profits, not just as a set of features aimed at moving hardware products. The company is reportedly considering rolling out subscription-only Apple Intelligence features in the future.
The first version of Apple Intelligence will be available in beta form this fall, initially only for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. However, it remains to be seen if the features will be good enough to drive a big iPhone upgrade cycle. In the meantime, Apple will still get a cut of in-app purchases for sign-ups to its AI partners' chatbot subscriptions.
Third-party AI services might serve as a nice stopgap for Apple while it slowly rolls out its own generative AI system. For the rest of us, this means more choice, even if it's just variations on the theme of algorithmic reconstruction of compressed data (or at least the possibility of entertainingly wrong cooking suggestions).
This news is a significant development for Apple and the tech industry as a whole. With the integration of Google Gemini, Apple is taking a step towards making AI an integral part of its devices, and this could lead to new and exciting possibilities for users. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting news.
