When you think of modern live service games what is the first thing that comes to your mind?
Well for me sadly its microtransactions. skins and “crossover events” and while we have done a whole video on the channel analyzing the effect live service has had on your favorite games one thing we did not touch on in that video was the impact this has had on the “identity of games”
So to understand what I mean by the “identity” lets take a trip back in time to my favorite gaming generation, the generation that I fell in love with online multiplayer games the good ol xbox 360.
The xbox 360 had tons of different popular multiplayer games and each of them felt extremely unique from one another in terms of art style and overall artistic vision of the games (not talking about gameplay)
Just taking a one year snapshot of the most played xbox games in 2008 alone shows a great variety in styles of games.
