In Armored Core 2, the Arena is given to you at the start, unlike the previous entry. Go through it first, at least up to rank 2, and you can save Ares and Matthias for post-game. The reason for this is to get a lot of money for a better Armored Core for the missions.

These fights are the hardest that the game offers.
Ares is easy when you realize he can't fly.
Matthias is always locked onto you, no matter what, and barely misses when he pulls out his Karasawa. To kill him, get a high damage weapon, and don't miss. Grenade launcher arms kill him in 6 hits.
