Army of Thieves brought the magic with CGI making awesome actions stunts happen and complex inner-mechanisms come to life. Jumping out of a window, breaking through glass only appeared on screen for a moment, but required a couple of different shoots in two completely separate places. It took a lot of extra time, effort and finances to make this happen but it was absolutely worth it.
The actors got a whole lot of running in, filming the catching of the van - this vehicle turned out to be pretty well equipped, with a green screen platform extending out of it making it both easier and safer to film. When Dieter started ripping through the city on a bike, you can bet CGI came into play in a pretty vital way. Filming took place in a studio, with a bike contraption enabling the actor to experience a bumpy ride. Shockingly, his time spent riding on the practical set - yes, down actual stairs- was very smooth since the was kitted out with yet another bike contraption. A drone camera was also used to really make the sequence action-forward.
The safecracking scenes intimately focused on Matthias Schweighöfer’s face as he was in safecracking action mode - but all the intricate visuals we see of the inner workings are completely computer-generated. When Schweighöter launched onto a moving train he was far from alone, without the effects the scene looks like way more of a fun time as he’d been surrounded by the crew helping pull off the stunt! While the majority of the zombies we see on screen are on TV’s, the ones appearing in Dieter’s nightmares are a brilliant blend of effects, prosthetics and makeup.
Army of Thieves brings its A-game in every way - and these VFX are a major win!
