NASA is constructing a manned spaceship for deep-space missions that will start a new age of space exploration for the first time in a generation. This new spaceship will take us farther than we've ever gone, even to the neighbourhood of the Moon and Mars, and a series of progressively difficult missions are in store. The Orion spacecraft, so named because it is one of the largest constellations in the night sky, is built to satisfy the changing requirements of our country's deep space exploration programme for many years to come. It is based on more than 50 years of spaceflight research and development. Orion's deep space exploration missions and unprecedented amounts of commercial space funding, will aid NASA and America in their quest to solve the universe's secrets and maintain their global leadership in space exploration.
Orion will act as the crew's spacecraft, offering emergency abort capabilities, sustaining them during their missions, and enabling safe re-entry from deep space return velocities. The Space Launch System, NASA's brand-new, potent heavy-lift rocket, will be used to launch Orion missions from the agency's updated spaceport at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. An unmanned Orion will travel hundreds of kilometres beyond the Moon over the course of nearly six weeks on the first integrated mission, Artemis I. The mission will open the door for astronaut-only flights, starting with Artemis II.
