A young man on the autism spectrum, Rory Keyes, asked us “what is autism?” Our experts Dr Tom Tutton and Thomas Kuzma respond.

They describe autism as a “diffability”, which is a characteristic that stands out, a bit like not having the perfect nose.

When our experts talk to families, they like to associate autism with characteristics such as logical thinking, honesty, aptitude with technology, sometimes incredible memory for facts. These are the gifts that autism brings to peoples lives.

With these gifts come some difficulties that may be faced. These include communication difficulties, slower processing of information as well as socialising challenges.

We all have differences and it is our job to work out what they are and how to value them.
