I accuse Julien Lamond, not only did he have a motive (evidenced from his letter) but he was coughing a lot, which could mean he'd been recently exposed to noxious chemicals (notice how the tanners wear masks while working). Everything seemed to fit, he could have easily learned of the warden's gambling debts through his relationship with Mme. Camille and was possibly even collaborating with the deputy warden, given the deputy's readiness to blame the gang and take his promotion (I admit I didn't pick up on the timing discrepancy in the warden's story, though it could still fit with my scenario if the warden was covering for Lamond). Turns out that the cough was nothing more than a red herring though, oh well.
