The V8 era saw the start of Formula 1's current hybrid phase. KERS was first introduced in 2009 and became standard kit on nearly all the cars by 2011. In 2014, the V8 engines were retired and turbocharged V6s came in their place. Simultaneously, the KERS hybrid system was extensively overhauled, making a turbocharger and inertial-harvested ERS standard equipment for all of F1's engine suppliers.
