ABOUT ASTEROIDS

Following on from the mega success of Space Invaders, Asteroids sold over 70,000 game cabinets to arcades making the company over $150 million dollars, while arcades raked in over $500 million.

Asteroids was so popular, arcades had to install larger coin holding boxes into the cabinets. Also, as the maker had already began making cabinets for their next offering called Lunar Lander, they began shipping out Asteroids games in Lunar Lander cabinets.

While the likes of Markiplier, Pewdiepie, Jacksepticeye and even Vanoss Gaming, might do a let's play on the game, or some other kind of content, if they hoped to get a world record, they'd most likely need to do it in a live stream.

The current world record is 43.36 million points and was achieved in a 54 hour live stream in 2010. Previous to that, it was 43.33 million. However, unofficially, the highest score is 48 million achieved by a group of friends who played a game in a laundromat. After 84 hours of game play, they walked away from the game.

The game cheat most like used on Asteroids to get such a high score, was the one were a single rock of two is left on the screen very early on, then the ship hangs near and edge of the screen, and spends its time sniping the spaceships which occasionally make an appearance.
