Astroblast Gameplay
A simple gameplay round of Astroblast by Mattel for the Atari 2600. Astroblast is a port of the game Astrosmash for the Intellivision.
In Astroblast, the player is positioned on the floor and must shoot falling asteroids and debris falling from above, with larger asteroids breaking up into smaller pieces when shot. Occasionally a UFO will fly across the top of the screen and shoot missiles down at the player. A spinning metal object will also fall from above from time to time; when it does, the player must shoot it down as it will cost the play a life should it hit the ground.
What really sets Astroblast apart from games like it at the time is its odd scoring system. In it, the player is penalized points for every object missed. Losing a life will also deduct points from the player's score.
The game features a normal mode as well as a very high speed difficult mode
