The objective on each level is get your Jester to collect 9 lamps and place them in a sort of bookcase, which can be found in several locations. The dragon/s hold the treasured Black Lamp fo the title. With all lamps placed you win the affections of the Princess, and go to the next level.
100,000 points scored awards an extra life, 1,000,000 awards 3 extra lives.
At 34:40 I put the music on, which is a nice rendition of "Greenshields" but gets annoying after a few minutes.
I can confirm that there's no ending, the levels simply get faster and from level 8 onwards you must kill 8 dragons on each for the 8 Black Lamps, plus a coloured one.
This makes for a hell of a lot of searching around so I constructed a map to help. Without a map it is virtually impossible to memorize so many similar-looking locations.
What I never knew before is that there's a room in the forest that allows quick (though one-way) transport to 30 different locations, which are fixed for each level. There's even a cathedral hidden in here with a cool stained-glass window.
Much as the various items scattered around give you essential power-ups such as extra energy and armour, I still added an infinite energy cheat around 3 and half hours in as it really started to hurt my hand from the constant shooting.
This is as far as I go! Still a fun and challenging game after 30-odd years.
