I look the immediate causes as described by news media, scientists, government reports and viral video...
While politics is definitely at play I touch on it only briefly as I'm so far removed and even the broadest strokes would have added another 7 minutes to the video...
Basically the Australian ecosystem was rocked by human settlement, the introduction of invasive species and the drought...so when human's take their eye off the ball things can kind of get out of hand down under...
With the problems getting out of hand, the videos of furry blankets making international news and city slickers freaking out the local government finally acted to bring the mouse population back under control. Their reaction likely has something to do with local elections that happened in may and the threat of an alliance breaking down...
The NSW Agriculture Minister, Adam Marshall, is trying to get a banned poisoned approved for emergency use. He calls bromadiolone "napalm for mice" but it was banned for a reason: its kills indiscriminately and at the scale being proposed (between 5000 and 10 000 litres) will exact a heavy toll on Australian wildlife.
But the chorus of opposition to the poison, from farmers to PETA, means the bromadiolone is unlikely to be deployed...at least not this year...but if the plague numbers remain through to the spring (September 2021) all bets are off...
