Avatar: Zuko’s Blue Spirit Mask Explained

I think it’s safe to say that the firebender Zuko, or Fire Lord Zuko, is by far a lot of the fans’ favorite character of the whole Avatar franchise. The boy went through so much trauma, and we’ve seen him evolve into such an amazing leader, that it's hard not to stan. There’s a few moments here and there throughout the series that gives us a glimpse at his softer side. And some of these also appear in the graphic novel called The Last Airbender Prequel: Zuko’s Story. The rather short graphic novel starts about an hour after Zuko engaged in combat with his father Fire Lord Ozai as they perform Agni Kai. While still in pain, and probably in shock, Azula announces his banishment. This is where Zuko’s crazy quest to find the Avatar truly starts, and as he begins to travel the world he makes one particular acquaintance who will change his life.
In one of the Fire Nation colonies he stumbles upon Hong Shen, an actor by day, and the Red Spirit by night. A real local legend, he stole from the rich, to give to the poor. While their relationship is a bit rocky at first, Hong ends up inspiring Zuko to become the Blue Spirit later on when he frees Aang from Admiral Zhao’s capture.
In today’s Avatar video, I will revisit “The Blue Spirit” episode to discuss Zuko’s changes, and then turn to the graphic novel where I explain how the Red Spirit accidentally created the Blue Spirit.
