Avatar's Sam Worthington almost played James Bond and Green Lantern
Actor Sam Worthington, best known for his role as Jake Sully in the blockbuster film Avatar, has revealed that he was a finalist to play James Bond in Casino Royale. In a recent interview with Variety, Worthington said that producer Barbara Broccoli even cut his hair ahead of a screen test in London, but that he struggled to embody the debonair nature of the character. "The suit did not fit," Worthington said.
Worthington also revealed that he was in the running for another major franchise role: DC's Green Lantern. However, the actor said that the character and plot didn't make sense to him. "It didn’t make much sense to me—the suit comes out of his skin? And I was like, 'He’s got this powerful ring that can create anything. Well, what can beat the ring?' The answer was, 'Nothing.' I was like, 'Well, something needs to beat it, or it won’t be very interesting,'" Worthington said.
Despite his success in Avatar, Worthington has had a mixed track record with blockbuster franchises, also appearing in Clash of the Titans and Terminator Salvation. In his interview with Variety, Worthington reflected on his early career choices, saying that he should have focused on films that explored the human condition rather than just being "great big spectacles."
Now, Worthington has a new philosophy when it comes to his acting career. "If I can’t bring anything to it, I’m not going to go and be involved in it. I don’t want to do that again. I don’t want to just be the action figure standing in the front. And that’s OK. It takes a lot to understand what you do want from this industry," he said.
It's always interesting to hear about the roles that actors almost landed, and Worthington's near misses with James Bond and Green Lantern are no exception. While it's unclear who ultimately ended up with the roles, it's clear that Worthington has learned from his past experiences and is now focusing on finding roles that challenge and inspire him.
