Baldur's Gate 3 is about to launch and depending on when you watch this, it may already be out, and many people are wondering : Do I need to Play the old Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 crpgs in order to enjoy Baldur's Gate 3? And the simple answer is no, no you do not, and Larian back this up and agrees. But don't click off the video just yet, I want to explain how the older Baldur's Gate games are absolute treasures but absolutely can feel outdated due to their reliance on Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and stats such as Thac0. You see, the original 2 Baldur's Gate CRPGs were really trying to simulate what Dungeons & Dragons was for that time and since D&D was on the AD&D system at that time, that's what Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 use. Now, of course Dungeons & Dragons is on 5th Edition and that is now what Baldur's Gate 3 is based on, but is also, just like the old Baldur's Gate games, trying to emulate playing D&D as a videogame but now with the 5th edition ruleset. This fact alone makes playing Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 only necessary for the story and the characters.
Now about the story : You don't need to know what happened in the first 2 Baldur's Gate games or their expansions to fully appreciate Baldur's Gate 3 : However there is a tiny bit of overlap here and there : References that Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 fans will pick up on, but you got to understand that when Larian was making Baldur's Gate 3, they well understood that a ridiculous amount of time has passed since the release of the original 2 Baldur's Gate games, and that MANY if not MOST of the people who would be interested in Baldur's Gate 3 would have never played the orignals or an absurd amount of time would have likely passed since those experiences.
So Baldur's Gate 3 takes place some 125 years after the events of Baldur's Gate 2, meaning that most of the characters have passed on. There is of course going to be some exceptions: But I would say more important to Baldur's Gate 3 than playing the originals would be your understanding of lore and factions and systems in 5th edition of Dungeons & Dragons. So if you want a little research into that, let me know and I'd be happy to make a video that walks through all the terminology to prepare you. I have already made a video right here on the channel about the lore you need to know to help you understand the basics, but to be honest, even without knowing any of that, Baldur's Gate 3 will teach you hands-on in the game as you are playing it. And if something is mentioned off the cuff such as a certain faction or creature that you wonder what it is, google is just a few clicks away to learn as you go.
If you for any reason have been confused whether you need to play the old Baldur's Gate games or not, then don't worry : Just enjoy Baldur's Gate 3 as a standalone game and you will be fine. Games like Baldur's Gate 3 don't release often : It is a MASSIVE CRPG promising hundreds of hours of gameplay for just a single session and the replayability with thousands of possible endings is mind-blowing.
