Barbarian by Palace Software was released in 1987 and was shrouded in controversy from the very start... The reason? A scantily clad Maria Whittaker posing on the cover of the Barbarian game in a scantily clad bikini.

Maria Whittaker found fame through the tabloid press appearing in the Sun newspaper and becoming a hugely successful page 3 girl. So it made perfect sense to feature this British beauty on the covers of this game release. The controversy surrounding this pushed sales through the roof, which led to WHSmith banning the sale of the game due to the Maria Whittaker and her bikini clad posing !

The publishers even decided to include a free poster with every copy of the game sold which I am sure adorned many teen boys bedroom walls in the day. But putting the Page 3 beauty of Maria Whittaker and ITVs very own Gladiator Wolf to one side what was the actual game like?

To be fair it was rather decent on all the systems and played brilliantly as a two player romp! But which version of this 8 Bit home computer released classic game comes out on top?

So kick back and lets take a look at the following 8 Bit home computer system versions of Barbarian:
Sinclair ZX Spectrum
Commodore 64
Amstrad CPC
BBC micro

And finally a look at the 16 Bit version featuring the Commodore Amiga and all the time taking in the classic imagery from the time featuring the Page 3 stunner that is Maria Whittaker.
