The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has faced intense criticism for failing to prepare for the latest wave of the coronavirus in India. At the same time, his administration has tried to suppress the true scale of the disaster, including its failures over oxygen supplies and vaccines, and has been aided and abetted by large sections of the national media. In this FCC Zoom event, journalists Rana Ayyub and Barkha Dutt discuss the enormous professional and personal challenges in covering India’s coronavirus crisis. They describe how they have continued to cover the country’s catastrophic health situation while coping with the deaths of immediate members of their families from the virus, and share what it has been like to live through the crisis while trying to uncover the truth about the situation.
