Released in 1998 for the PlayStation 1, "Batman & Robin" was a sandbox action-adventure game based off of the 1997 movie. In this game, you can choose to play as either Batman, Robin, or Batgirl, each having their own skills and abilities. The goal of this game is to prevent Mr. Freeze from turning Gotham City into a frozen wasteland. Other villains that are in this game include Frosty, Bane, and Poison Ivy. They help Mr. Freeze by stealing important components (jewels, toxins, computer chips, etc.) that he needs to become immortal. If you fail to obtain these, Mr. Freeze will become near-invincible at the end of the game.

This is an amazing PS1 game made by Acclaim Entertainment, the same company that made Shadowman, WWF Attitude, Turok, and many other well-known games. In this game, you can pretty much do everything Batman can, such as driving the Batmobile, solving crime mysteries, using a wide array of gadgets, and fighting mindless thugs with powerful combos. It's fun to roam around Gotham City, GTA-style. For a PS1 game, these graphics were very ambitious for their time, especially for the open-world gameplay. At the same time, there can be pixelation at some points, added with darkness. Some of this is a bit exaggerated by the video quality that I recorded.

This game also excels in the gameplay department. In order to figure out when and where the next crime scene will be, you must find clues that are scattered across the streets of Gotham. After analyzing them under the Batcomputer, you can then figure out where the next crime scene will be. Once there, you can kick some serious Snowthug butt, Batman style! Levels in this game include the Gotham City Museum, the Botanical Gardens, Axis Chemicals, Turkish Baths, and the Observatory, each having their own unique feel to them.

During my playthrough, there are a few areas that I skipped due to tedium, particularly Arkham Asylum. Whenever I enter and make a wrong turn in the cellblock area, I immediately lose, forcing me to start over! Also during my playthrough, I skipped Ivy's Lab since it would've wasted my gadget resources. There is nothing much to that level, other than to find more clues that you can find out on the street.

I'd give this game a 9 out of 10. This game's ambition blew me away back in 1998, and it still holds up quite well. This is basically the predecessor for the modern Batman games (the "Arkham" series).

Foreign versions of this game were released in English, Spanish, German, and French for all PAL territories. A separate Italian version also exists for this game.
