Batman Returns (SNES) - (Mania | 1cc | Longplay)
Hey all, as the votes suggested our final run for this year is Batman Returns on SNES! Apologies though for skipping the intro on this because I'm in a bit of a rush to do this, I might do it again but on normal. This run itself was extremely lucky thanks to a speeedrun strat I saw a few days ago.
Anyways Batman Returns, leave it to Konami to take a licensed property and make a fantastic beat em up out of it. Hitting someone in in this game feels extremely satisfying especially when you grapple enemies and hurl them towards walls.
Plot is pretty much straight from the movie. From what I can gather (since I also haven't seen the whole movie) each stage is basically a scene from the movie, heck even the first boss lets you retreat the scene in the movie where the clown says "you missed."
Combat is pretty straight forward but overall satisfying since the dark knight just slams enemies to the ground and even hurls enemies towards windows, walls, fences etc. There's also the double headbutt move where you can grab two enemies at once and slam them against each other.
There also the items such as batman's grappling hook (or spear gun), the batarang and an explosive test tube. The grappling hook can be used to lunge batman across the screen, the batarang stuns enemies and the test tube clears enemies of the screen.
Certain parts of a stage will only allow batman to use just his batarangs, the grappling hook also changes it's function, it's used to help batman get across platforms and avoid hazards.
Difficulty wise it's slightly fair, Mania isn't too bad but this game is rather reliant on lives. Getting hit by the clowns can always guarantee they knock you down so be sure to block or cape sweep if you get hit or cornered. The spear gun helps too if you want to reach one side of the screen quickly or knock down some tricky enemies.
Though the cheapest enemy here is basically Catwoman, she's way too fast and eats too much damage if you're not careful, even in normal she just eats away at your lives. The Penguin on the other hand is much easier to beat, with or without the speedrun strat.
Still, this is a fantastic beat em up for the snes. It nails the dark and moody atmosphere of Gotham City along with great combat and fun challenge (for the most part.) If you're looking for a some old school batman games, then I highly recommend you start with this one before you check out the sunsoft titles.
A shoutout to @LRock617 as well for that sweet infinite punch trick seen in their speedrun of Batman Returns. Seriously, that infinite punch trick makes it easier to beat Catwoman.
If you like my runs be sure to check out the group I'm in if you want to see us play more good ol fashion retro games!
