Battle of Antietam, America's Bloodiest Day
Yesterday September 17th, 2023 was the 161 Anniversary of the Battle of Antietam. The Battle was the climax of Robert E. Lee's Maryland Campaign. The objective of the Campaign was to show the North that they were not as untouchable as they believed themselves to be. Also he looked to claim supplies from Federal caches across the state, and hopefully recruit Southern sympathizing Marylanders.
George B. McClellan commanding the Army of the Potomac however, was ordered by President Lincoln and the War Department to push the Confederates back south of Potomac River. They would engage in small skirmish and battles with Lee, until finally meeting with him on September 17th, outside the small town of Sharpsburg, Maryland.
The fighting would start at 5:30am and wouldn't end until 5:30pm. It would come at cost of over 22,700 men on both sides, wounded, dead or missing. And it would also result in the Emancipation Proclamation being declared and the removal of George B. McClellan as commander of the Army of the Potomac.
