Battle of Carthage, Missouri (July 5, 1861) - Battle Reenactment and Tour of Camp Life (KFTR)
Kilroy From The Road (KFTR), I was able to attend the 160th Anniversary/Reenactment of the American Civil War Battle of Carthage, Missouri this weekend. The actual battle took place on July 5, 1861 between the approximately 6,000 volunteer Missouri State Guard (under Missouri Governor Jackson) fighting for the South and 1,100 better equipped/trained Union forces under Colonel Franz Sigel. This video captures some of the camp life, drill and inspections, as well as, the entire reenactment, with the initial artillery exchanges, the advance of both sides, cavalry skirmishes, the retreat of the Union forces, fallen soldiers and the surgeon’s tent. From burnt biscuits to bloody stumps . . . with some cannon fire in between . . . oh, and some nice ground footage . . . must have been hit by shrapnel a few times . . . after I almost got kicked by a Missouri State Guard horse . . .
