About the Game:
Released on October 16, 2016, Battlefield 1 (abbreviated as BF1) is the fifteenth installment in the Battlefield Series developed by DICE and published by EA. The game is set during World War One, focusing on the traumatic historical battles which took place across Europe. With WWI being seen as the “dawn of all out warfare”, BF1 is marked as a soft origin story for the franchise.
Following the rise of the Second Industrial Revolution, many of the world’s great powers had enjoyed a boon of technological advancement – an age of invention which include aircraft, motorcars, ever larger steamships; even telephones and more opulent steam locomotives. However, with this rise in the resulting nationalism came the rise of national tensions. The rise of the German Empire and the decline of the Ottoman empire had destabilized the balance of power in Europe, causing shifts in alliances and an arms race between the great powers. After the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria in 1914, the tensions and international posturing had flashed into all out warfare. When a swift victory proved impossible for conventional warfare, traditional military strategies were put to the test against the backdrop of rapidly evolving technology as the entire industrial and technological focus of the great powers had shifted from enriching the lives of others to one of extinguishing lives in devastating battles of attrition. The introduction of mechanized warfare, air power, and chemical weapons revolutionized the battlefield, leading to devastating consequences on humanity that no doctor was fully prepared to treat. The war was marked by a shift from traditional tactics to more modern, mechanized approaches. Stormtroopers, the creeping barrage, chemical warfare, and the psychological warfare of bombing civilians from far away all became the hallmarks of the Great War.
By the war’s end, many nations either fell or were forever changed by the conflict. Nearly 40 million soldiers and civilians perished, and the nature of war was forever changed, as soldiers whom had previously ridden in on horseback, rode out on tanks.
Battlefield 1 received positive reviews from critics, who saw it as a major improvement over the series' previous installments such as Battlefield 4 and Battlefield Hardline. Most of the praise was directed towards its WWI setting, single-player campaigns, multiplayer modes, visuals, and sound design. The game was a commercial success, with estimated sales of over 15 million copies.
