Battlefield 3 Any% Speedrun 2:25:52 NEW PB IN DESCRIPTION
My new PB: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIaR1mMec_w
0 deaths but some sloppiness here and there. Took some gunfights more safely than probably necessary to avoid stupid deaths.
- Semper Fidelis and Swordbreaker had only small time losses
- Uprising: some sloppiness and I didn't use the rat QTE skip
- Going Hunting and Guillotine went well. New skip in Guillotine can save 10 seconds compared to normal javelin route.
- Comrades went really well and I was able to do the fight QTE skip
- Thunder Run and Fear No evil went well
- Start of Night Shift was really bad, had a hard time vaulting on top of Campo losing me 30+ seconds. Reloading checkpoint at the start of Night Shift allows you to run straight to the ladder. Rest of the level went smoothly
- Rock and a Hard Place went well but still lost 15+ seconds compared to prior run
- Kaffarov went otherwise smoothly but wasn't able to do the door skip
- The Great Destroyer went well but I took the train section a bit safer than probably necessary as I didn't want to get knifed and ruin my run
Sub 2h 25min is possible if everything goes perfectly, every skip is done with first try and with additional optimizations. Even though the game is quite long to speedrun, there isn't much optimizations to be made since it's so scripted most of the time. Half of the levels are already in a 5-10 seconds error margin and those that aren't have either hard to do skips or long gunfight sections.
Hip fire glitch I occasionally used is done by ADSing with a weapon and using knife immediately after you shoot. Game now thinks you're ADS all the time and gives you improved hip fire which resets after you shoot.
Comparing this game to Bad Company 2 as far as speedrunning goes, both have their own issues with BC2 having some RNG when playing at high framerates and BF3 having infuriating knife lunging enemies. Both games have some boring auto scroll sections though it is much more prevalent in BF3. So much time wasted waiting for NPCs to follow you or trigger checkpoints, unskippable "cutscenes" in almost all levels and overall super linear long or scripted levels make this game a lot longer than needed.
I did some "casual speedruns" on both games where I play them like you normally would without any skips with watching every cutscene and fighting every fight. Comparing to real speedruns, BC2 went from casual ~3h to under 1h 15min speedrun and BF3 went from casual 3h 30min to 2h 30min. That should show you how much unskippable filler there is in BF3.

Tools/programs used for this speedrun:
- Timer: https://livesplit.org/ Tutorial for transparent timer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiuxAyk7nN4
- Recording software: https://obsproject.com/
- Encoder: NVIDIA NVENC H.264 (new)
NVENC allows you to record with almost no performance loss to your game and 24000 Kbps is the maximum bitrate Youtube allows for 1440p 60fps. Find settings that you're happy with. I use these settings because I want high quality recording but with minimal performance hit to games since I want to play at high frame rates.
