bayes' theorem is bae (Re-Learn Probability With Me: Valentine's Day Edition)
9On this Single Awareness Day, oops, I meant Valentine's Day :p I take you through Bayes' theorem, a formula that underpins a whole sect of statisticians. Bayes' theorem, named after the Reverend Thomas Bayes is a formula that describes how to calculate the probability of an event given that another event has occurred.
For this Valentine's Day, I thought it would be a fun example to explain how to use Bayes' theorem in an example involving romance. Specifically, we formulate how good Bayesians like ourselves might attempt to estimate the probability our crush likes us given that our crush responds to our instant message within 2 minutes. We also see how more evidence in favor of our hypothesis is used in the context of Bayes' theorem.
