BeamNG.Drive 0.13 Automation Collaboration Beta - Exporter Car Tests: Automation Test Tracks
Track testing exported cars in the BeamNG.Drive 0.13 Automation Collaboration Closed Beta. I was one of the content creators invited into the beta and got to explore the new Automation Test Track map and test out the Automation export features early, as well as getting an early look at BeamNG version 0.13 audio improvements. I made 6 cars in Automation and tested all currently available time trials in the beta, timestamps below:
0:00 Hill Climb Reverse: Crown 254 (FWD Hatchback)
2:07 Handling Track: TR20 GT (RWD Sports Coupe)
3:56 Hill Climb: GB5 Rally (Joke car but actually good)
5:54 Handling Track Reverse: Mor Icarus (Joke car)
7:45 Test Track Reverse: Crown 500 (FWD Hatchback)
10:30 Test Track: Vol TR1 Tracker (MR Hypercar)
The Test Track was already revealed, but the hill pass up to the dam and the handling tracks are a very welcome surprise. Gutter runs and maneuvering around black ice are unique challenges and a lot of fun to try and master. I think the hill climb is my favorite for those reasons, but the Automation Test Track is a worthy addition to BeamNG's tracks list and easily ranks up there with Hirochi Raceway and West Coast Circuit.
Designing cars in Automation was fairly intuitive, though it took a couple days to learn tuning adjustments for better handling when exporting to BeamNG. I did have a few frustrating moments with engine building, as the car and the engine are treated as separate entities and have to both be cloned if you're trying to make multiple trims for a car model. If you only clone the model, you'll be detuning or upgrading the engine for both versions of the car and possibly erasing a lot of work. Still, I'm usually pretty hopeless with tuning and I actually had a few things turn out well in BeamNG using the tool tips and graphs in Automation.
It was obvious there were plenty of tricks and clever part combinations to learn if you wanted to achieve more complex designs or match certain real world design concepts, but it wasn't that often that I wanted to do something and couldn't figure out how. Making joke cars is also a fun time and reminds me of some of the stuff I'd come across in Forza, and I'm happy with how my serious designs turned out.
