Bears QB Fields ruled out vs Jets; Peterman will start
The Bears will be without starting quarterback Justin Fields when they face the Jets on Sunday. Here’s what you need to know:Fields suffered a separated left shoulder and torn ligaments against the Falcons on Nov. 20. Chicago coach Matt Eberflus said the QB won’t be placed on injured reserve. Trevor Siemian will get his 30th career start, and first as a Bear. BackstoryAfter a slow start to the season, Fields has been on a tear in the second half of the season, including rushing for an NFL quarterback-record 178 yards in Week 9 against the Dolphins. Prior to signing a two-year contract with the Bears in March, Siemian had stints with the Broncos, Vikings, Jets, Titans and Saints. His career completion percentage is 58.9. As a starter for the Broncos during the 2016 season, the 30-year-old tossed 18 touchdowns and threw 10 interceptions while totaling 3,401 yards. How will the offense look with Siemian under center? With Siemian in the lineup, the Bears obviously lose the running threat at quarterback. Fields has averaged 106.7 rushing yards per game over the past six, which is remarkable. The Bears can still use their RPO concepts with Siemian, who won’t have an issue running the offense. He’s experienced and has been in similar offensive systems. He’s more of a pocket quarterback, though, which puts a lot of pressure on a below-average offensive line against a formidable Jets front that is fifth in the NFL in sacks per pass attempt. It is certainly possible that Siemian can find some success through the air and even unlock things we haven’t seen yet from the league’s least productive passing offense, but it’s going to be a tough matchup. Siemian’s ability to make anticipatory throws on time and on target will be key. — FishbainKey statThe streak of the Bears not having a QB start every game extends to 13 seasons. The last one to do so was Jay Cutler in 2009.
