I hope you'll enjoy my performance of the Beethoven Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp Minor (Moonlight) 1st Movement. The music is mysterious and haunting, with slow, arpeggiated chords throughout. Beethoven writes “si deve suonare tutto questo pezzo delicatissimamente e senza sordini” at the beginning. This translates as: The entire piece should be played with the greatest delicacy and without mutes. 'Without mutes' implies that the pedal should be held throughout the first movement; however, this is not practical on modern pianos, as sustain capabilities are significantly greater than they were in Beethoven's time. Blending the notes together with the pedal helps create the moody atmosphere of this first movement.
