1. Introduction to Behavioural Sciences:
Behavioural science deals with study of human behavior using the principle of psychology,
sociology and anthropology (Humanity)
Anth topology is the study of culture, geographical distribution of human beings and sign and
symptoms of diseases.
Concept of Holistic Medicine:
Holistic medicine is inspired from the theory of holism/gestalt. Holistic medicine is a form of
healing that considers the whole person (body, mind, spirit and emotions) for emotional health
and wellness. While traditional medicine separates the mind and body, and focus only on
diseased portion

(BPS
1) Bio-Psycho-Social (BPS) model of health and disease:
In 1977, George Engel theorized the importance of incorporating the biological aspects of
medicine with the behavioural sciences.
According to this model biological psychological and social factors play a significant role in
human functioning & illness. It points that health is best understood by combination of
biological, psychological and social factors rather than/purely biological terms PS provides a
comprehensive approach toward holistic medicine.
It was based on three
principles
a) Diseases a result of multiple factors that act together to make
an individual feel ill.
illness and disease are not a consequence of biological factorselone.
b) An individual is composed of a complex, combined system composed of interrelating
subsystem element of mind, body, spirit and social relationships, all having feedback
Loops Any change in one will result to changes in other systems
c) Biological, psychological and social factors form triad o interact and serve as
determinants
of disease.
2) The Integrated Model of Health Care: Correlation of Body, Brain, Mind Spirit land
