Let's be real here: Layla is not as good as Desmond. Layla and her new team only serve to give forced exposition dumps to the player. Everyone already knows each other and seem to have already developed as characters. That is not good for a story.

Desmond spent 5 games developing and getting to know his team. It made sense for things to be explained to him because he didn't know anything, like the player. What we learned, he learned and vice versa. Even his attitude changed as the games went on, going from reluctant guy who just wants to go home to a noble hero willing to sacrifice his own life to save the world. Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane had their share of development and growth too and both were greatly moved and affected by Desmond's death as we saw in later titles. I don't even remember the names of Layla's team because of how irrelevant they are, like they were just written to be filler.

Desmond was a bartender running from his legacy and was forced to learn to accept his past and become an Assassin. Layla is a former Abstergo employee who invented her own Super-Animus, discovered Bayek's remains, got recruited personally by William Miles, jumped headfirst into becoming an Assassin, and found Leonidas' Spear in a field somewhere under some rocks. And it seems like her personality has changed for no reason.

Desmond was a well rounded character that the fans loved. Layla is a poorly handled character with wasted potential instead of being an avatar for the player. It'd be better if she was a newcomer who learned as we did instead of a super-genius that invented her own Animus and has everything handed to her. They had a chance to redeem her here and they didn't.
