While looking for strats (in Chapter 3, Level 2) I noticed the elevator behind me disappeared. If you fall down you have to load checkpoint, as otherwise you're stuck. Interestingly, later in the video, the gates closed and after that the elevator reappeared. It might be random if the elevator is there or not, I'm not sure.
