[Binaural Audio] Formula Cars Warming Up & Pit Lane Ambience Sounds at GP de France Historique 2025!
I finally got to put my upgraded binaural gear to the test, recording things that were unthinkable until last year (including warm ups), and I have to say I'm really enjoying carrying it around with me over these past few months. But now it's time to start sharing something with you! I'm still finding the right balance in audio editing but I'm sure I'll get there the more videos of this kind I produce.
For those who aren't familiar with this audio recording technique, it's a special way of replicating the feeling of 'being there' simply by listening to the audio with your headphones (find more details on 'how it works' further down in the description). Generally it's applied to record relaxing nature sounds but, being obsessed with engines, I wanted to apply this method to my passion.
So this video is related to the recent Grand Prix de France Historique, an event born with the intention of celebrating the history of Formula 1 and historic motorsport at Circuit Paul Ricard. Most of the weekend is dedicated to single-seaters of various categories and years, from F1 to F3000, World Series and old Formula 2 machines, divided into groups which can take part in simple free practice sessions or real races.
Stay tuned for more videos from this event and, of course, more binaurals!
(Had to modify the audio via the Youtube editor at the beginning of the chapter related to the Toro Rosso STR8, at 28 minutes, to cover a copyrighted song which was being broadcast over the track's loudspeakers at the time. Sorry if you hear something strange in that segment for a few seconds).
Please remember no one is forcing you to watch it for its entire length, especially when it comes to these binaural vids, which are all primarly for background listening.

-- What the hell is a Binaural recording? --
Binaural recordings are reproductions of sound the way human ears hear it. Traditionally, recordings have been made using mono or stereo. Mono uses a single microphone while stereo uses two, spaced apart from each
other. Binaural recording takes the stereo method one step further by placing two microphones approximately
at the same average distance that exists between one and the other human ear. But that's not enough as to recreate the best effect
microphones must have an 'obstacle' in their way which corresponds to our head. The physical influence from the head is the so-called Head-Related Transfer Function (or HRTF for short). This transfer function expresses how the head and ears affects the transmission of an acoustical signal from a sound source to the eardrums.
If a car passes on your left side the sound will take a
few extra microseconds to reach the right ear and it will also be louder in one ear (left) than the other.
This is caused by the fact we have a thick skull and spongy brain between the two ears, so sound waves
interact with the physical constitution of the listener and the surrounding space. HRTF is closely related to the individual shape of the human head, thus binaural recordings sound the best if recorded using your personal HRTF. However, in general, everybody experiences a much higher envelopment of the surrounding sound/3D effect if the recording has been done with a binaural microphone, even though the HRTF is not their own.
