Bioshock Infinite and the Problems of Period Pieces
I'm a big fan of both period pieces and the Bioshock series. It's just too bad that Bioshock Infinite, the most ambitious and probably the most hyped-up of the three Bioshock games, is a pretty bad period piece.
To figure out where Infinite's period pretensions fall shamefully short, let's take a closer look at the world of Columbia, both what's there that shouldn't be and what should be there that isn't.
In case you're curious, here are the old-timey songs playing in the background, in order of appearance:
-"Cotton Blossom", from Show Boat (Jerome Kern)
-"Solace" (Scott Joplin)
-"The Entertainer" (Scott Joplin)
-"In Old New York", from The Red Mill (Victor Herbert)
-"Swipesy/Palm Leaf Rag" Medley (Scott Joplin)
-"Moonlight Bay" (Percy Wenrich)
-"Original Rags/Peacherine Rag/The Easy Winners" Medley (Scott Joplin)
Also, the historical figures shown at 10:22 are, from left to right: Booker T. Washington, Evelyn Nesbit, Emma Goldman, Harry Houdini, and J.P. Morgan.
