Black Sheep is suing Universal Music Group for $750 million
Black Sheep, the '90s hip-hop group, is suing Universal Music Group (UMG) for $750 million. According to Rolling Stone, the duo's class action lawsuit is based on an alleged side deal between UMG and Spotify. Titus and McLean, the members of Black Sheep, claim that UMG has not fully paid the royalties owed to them and the rest of the artist roster due to the "sweetheart" agreement with the music streaming platform. Additionally, the lawsuit asserts that UMG accepted cash and company stock from Spotify in return for music, but then "shortchanged" the artists when it came to distributing the royalties. The duo states in the suit that this "previously undisclosed" deal breaches their contract with former Universal subsidiary Polygram, which requires UMG to pay 50 percent of all net receipts associated with the exploitation of their music.
