After rescuing Rinoa, she explains to Squall that she has his ring and asks what the lion means. A naming screen comes up for the player to name their lion whatever they want, for Squall its name defaults to "Griever".

As the symbol of Squall's virtues and also the representation of his driving force, Griever is also meant to represent the parts of himself he wants to overcome. In the Japanese release, Ultimecia talks of summoning the one entity Squall views as most power and brings Griever into physical form as a Guardian Force. In essence, Griever's strength lies in the idea that its potential is only limited by where limit is believed to be: so the more belief is envisioned possible than so too is their more potential for growing something better. Griever is noted to be powerful precisely because of his importance to Squall himself and so too in empowering him. Ultimately, recognizing Griever as part of his strength, Squall must also overcome this part of himself to move forward.

Griever exists in multiple places including Squall's Revolver and Lion Heart gunblade. On Revolver, it is etched into either side of his blade and a keychain is attached to its handle. On Lion Heart, the magazine assembly shows Griever with its wings coming outward and head etching up into the blade.
