This is the secret area 9, where you will go if you collected all of the items in the game before beating the level 8 boss. If you don't collect all items, you will see the "normal" ending, and won't progress to level 9; However, we collected them all, so we get to go to area 9.
After Fred leads us to Sophia Zero - a super-powerful version of Sophia - we are transported to the alternate dimension, where the "final" mutation is believed to reside. I die a few times, but we get through and get the best ending in the game.
I might do alternate playthroughs with the DLC characters later, might even attempt the punishing "destroyer" mode, but we'll see.
