On the subject of the comeback mechanics not really working well for last place, I think some of it has to do with the boosters beyond the first. The shorter duration and faster boosters leads to people ahead of you having their booster slots empty more often, and also leads to maybe a bit more space between vehicles, giving people more time to react to boosters.


Also, it makes it more likely that last place is far enough behind that they just get dragged along by the automatic warps, which prevents picking up items.


While having nobody shooting at you is a great benefit, the later weapons (sonic blaster and slime) aren't as big of game changers compared to previous weapons as the Pulse Booster and Rocket Booster.


I think the game was best balanced right when the saws were introduced.
