La historia nos presenta a dos nuevos héroes dentro de la Sociedad de Almas, los gemelos Matsuri y Fujimaru Kudo, quienes son rescatados de las garras de un malvado Hollow por el capitán de la quinta división, Seigen Suzunami (un nuevo personaje para la historia que sustituye a Shinji Hirako), y por el entonces capitán de la doceava división, Kisuke Urahara.

La acción del juego comienza muchos años antes de la aparición de Ichigo y sus amigos en escena, por lo que veremos algunos de los personajes más emblemáticos de la serie en plena juventud, Cómo Rukia y Renji o Toshiro y Momo, antes de ni siquiera plantearse el formar parte de las patrullas de shinigami.
