Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) has been gaining traction for well over a decade and has been known to be highly effective since a review of 13 separate studies (Powers and Emmelkamp, 2008) involving nearly 400 people.

It turns out that VRET is so powerful that you can even cure people of their phobias completely by accident!

This footage is from a beta testing session of the Brain Man VR Team Building experience.

One of the participants was reluctant to come out on the glass-floored balcony over what appeared to be a long drop and once she did her heart rate rocketed. Yet she chose to soldier on, determined to not let her phobia get in the way of what she wanted to do.

After multiple exposures to the illusion of being at high altitude over a long drop, 20 minutes later she announced she had completely acclimatised and was no longer suffering any discomfort. Perhaps not a complete cure, but certainly a step in the right direction.

For the avoidance of doubt, anyone participating in Brain Man VR Team Building will find that the balcony can now be switched to an opaque material at the touch of a button, in circumstances where people are uncomfortable with heights.
