Story : Breaking News: Mount Ruang Erupts Again, Shuts Down International Airport.
Indonesia's Mount Ruang, located in the remote North Sulawesi province, has unleashed its fury once more, prompting terrifying evacuations and the closure of a nearby international airport. The volcano, which had already erupted multiple times this month, erupted again on Tuesday, with ash reaching as far as Malaysia.
The eruption, occurring around 1.15 am local time, spewed a towering column of ash more than 5 kilometers into the sky, according to Indonesia's volcanology agency. Over 12,000 locals have been evacuated from the area, and authorities have raised the alert level to its highest.
Images captured by the agency reveal the magnitude of the eruption, with a fiery red column bursting into the sky and a thick ash cloud billowing from the crater. The situation remains volatile, with the potential for further eruptions, incandescent rock ejections, hot clouds, and even tsunamis due to volcanic material entering the sea.
Despite previous evacuations, some residents had returned home after the emergency response status ended. However, it remains uncertain how many have been forced to evacuate again in the wake of this latest eruption.
The eruption has also prompted the closure of Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado, the provincial capital, more than 100 kilometers away. AirNav Indonesia, the state-run air traffic control provider, announced the closure citing "Ruang volcanic ash."
Indonesia, positioned on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," frequently experiences seismic and volcanic activities. Mount Ruang's latest eruption serves as a stark reminder of the country's vulnerability to natural disasters. Stay tuned for further updates on this unfolding situation.
