Breath of Fire II Japanese VHS Promotional Video (1994)
This incredibly rare VHS showcasing Breath of Fire II was originally distributed in Japan prior to the release of the game on December 2, 1994 for the Super Famicom. There are a bunch of fascinating discrepancies between the footage and what ended up in the final game! Please read the full video description to see!
A HUGE thank you to Clyde & Heidi of Legends of Localization for providing a digital transfer of this VHS!

01:10 - The sound effects for the prologue's logo sequence are enhanced.
01:13 - The enhanced version of the "Breath of Fire" world map theme here is most likely the MIDI master version, before it was downsampled for the Super Famicom / SNES.
01:40 - The thick grass sprites on the world map differ from the final game.
01:49 - The church sprite differs slightly from the final game.
03:12 - HomeTown world map sprite is colored differently.
03:30 - The enhanced version of the "Daybreak" track here is most likely the MIDI master version, before it was downsampled for the Super Famicom / SNES.
04:58 - The "Item Get / Fish Get" celebratory jingle is used instead of the final BoF1 "Holy" party join jingle.
05:04 - The church, bush, and archway sprite designs in Gate differ greatly from the final game.
05:11 - The enhanced version of the "White Wings" track here is most likely the MIDI master version, before it was downsampled for the Super Famicom / SNES.
05:15 - The Ranger Guild's office has some differing furniture sprites than the final game.
06:27 - The enhanced version of the "Our Journey" world map track here is most likely the MIDI master version, before it was downsampled for the Super Famicom / SNES.
07:03 - Katt uses the "S. Boom" spell, although she doesn't normally get this spell in the final game.
07:05 - There is no hit sound effect for enemies after being affected by an attack spell.
07:26 - The first part of Nina's spell conjuration sound effect is different from the final game.
07:50 - The bush sprites in Windia are removed in the final version, the barrels, stairs, and bridge to the castle are different, and the Item Shop is colored pink / tan as opposed to brown / yellow like in the final game.
08:01 - Surfy's house sprite on the world map is different than in the final game.
08:17 - The dirt patches, Namanda sprite, and bush sprites on the world map are all different.
08:47 - Jean's "Jab" ability is missing a sound effect.
09:18 - The enhanced version of the "I'll Do It!" boss theme here is most likely the MIDI master version, before it was downsampled for the Super Famicom / SNES.
09:45 - Nina's attack sound effect is different than in the final game.
09:53 - Battle menu sound effects are missing.
11:09 - Jean's frog hop sound effects are missing.
11:21 - Rand's "dizzying" sound effect is completely different than the final version.
11:30 - Like Nina's spell conjuration sound effect, Ryu's dragon transformation sound effect is also different and the Fire Dragon's flame spell is missing sounds.
11:49 - The enhanced version of the "Expedition" world map track here is most likely the MIDI master version, before it was downsampled for the Super Famicom / SNES. Interestingly, "Expedition" was only used in Breath of Fire, so it is unknown whether this tune was planned for use again in Breath of Fire II or if the creators of this VHS just decided to use the BoF1 version's master track, anyway.
12:26 - TownShip's town sprite is different from the original version.
12:28 - The transition between world map to the Fishing minigame is different from the final game.
12:45 - "I'll Do It!" is played again. You have to wonder if this track was originally intended as the normal battle theme since no bosses are shown?
13:58 & 14:24 - "Our Journey" is played again. The TownShip environment looks quite different from the final game.
15:34 - "Breath of Fire" is played again. Note how the bass samples sound very similar to some of Breath of Fire III's bass samples.
OTHER - Several enemies appear in locations where they don't actually appear in the final game.
The last 2 minutes of the video go into various details about the release of the game, including a way for viewers to enter to win a rare, unique Breath of Fire II t-shirt and a pocket watch.
