This enormous Adagio is the center of gravity of this symphony, only the finale matches it in size and complexity, but it's also its emotional core. Indeed, Bruckner takes a break from the darker territories explored in the previous two movements in order to show new, more personal feelings throughout its whole runtime.
Aside from the one that concluded his unfinished Ninth Symphony, this is considered by many to be Bruckner's finest and most touching Adagio.
