Steps for Trench Composting

1. Choose a Location

Select a garden bed or an area where you plan to improve soil fertility.
Ensure it is away from tree roots to prevent competition for nutrients.

2. Dig a Trench

The trench should be about 12–18 inches deep and 6–12 inches wide, depending on the amount of waste.

The depth ensures proper decomposition and prevents pests.

3. Add Organic Waste

Place kitchen scraps and other compostable materials at the bottom of the trench.

Avoid meat, dairy, and oily foods to prevent attracting pests.

4. Cover with Soil

Add a layer of soil (about 6–12 inches) to completely bury the waste.

This prevents odors and accelerates decomposition.

5. Let It Decompose

The composting process takes 6–12 weeks, depending on temperature and moisture.

Beneficial microbes and earthworms will break down the waste, enriching the soil.

6. Plant Over the Area (Optional)

After decomposition, you can plant vegetables, flowers, or other crops in the enriched soil.

Benefits of Trench Composting

✔ No need for compost bins or turning piles.
✔ Reduces kitchen waste efficiently.
✔ Enhances soil fertility and water retention.
