It really depends whether you are going to be a player or a Dungeon Master. Whether you want to run home brew campaigns or you want to run pre-written adventures like the D&D Starter Set, Curse of Strahd, or any other pre-made adventure. As the DM you'll need all three books Players Handbook (PHB), Dungeon Masters Guide (DMG), and the Monster Manual (MM). You don't really need anything else but there is reasons you might want the other products.
