I don't have anything positive to really say about this game- and I definitely have nothing positive to say about california or its people. California Speed is a racing game developed by Midway, which kind of shocked me because I expected something halfway decent but was thoroughly disappointed. The game was released towards the second half of the Nintendo 64's life cycle and during the middle years. According to Popotiq.com, one of the developers of the game was interviewed and revealed that nearly the entire team was full of new programmers and they were absolutely hounded on to "push, push push!" and get the game out as fast as possible. Seems to me that management had zero fucks for the quality of the game and had their eyes on the dollar bills. The situation seems like bullshit to me. I feel for the developers.

The main problem I have with this game is that I can't control the vehicles well. It really is like driving a bucket of gravy on wheels- the cars swerve left and right and I can't keep them straight. I would expect this of a golf cart going 140mph, but not the other, heavier vehicles. Once an opponent passes you you are more or less fucked. There is no real way to close the gap and the best you will get is whatever place they leave you in. No nitrous, no drifting, nada. The gold standard for this day and age was Gran Turismo and Ridge Racer. I would much rather be playing those. Like Men in Black 2- this was a joyless cash grab.
